Web-based and Mobile Applications

The ineffective communication of science to policymakers and society in general has been a nagging criticism of conservation science for at least the past 20 years. In the next few decades, dialogues between scientists and other segments of civil society will become even more important as we face the prospect of having to simultaneously address the global challenges of climate change, food security, energy security, biodiversity conservation and economic development.

By collaborating with professional software developers, we seek to produce web-based and mobile applications that would facilitate the dissemination of the models and tools we produce to policymakers, environmental groups, local villagers, educators, students and the general public. Examples of these applications include:

REDD Calculator
App for assessing environmental and socioeconomic tradeoffs of implementing Indonesia's forest moratorium.

Species Extinction Calculator
App for predicting changes in species extinction risks at the landscape scale due to land-use change.

Land Use Calculator
App for predicting environmental and socioeconomic outcomes under alternative land use scenarios.

DeforLeaks.org
Crowdsourcing evidence and stories of tropical deforestation and its impacts.
